Before sitting to write today, I gave some thought to the word “Beginner.” It would feel strange to write about our upcoming Beginners Yoga Series (Fridays at 10:30 AM Nov 30th-Dec 21st) from any “voice of wisdom” because even as a yoga instructor, I feel as if I’m beginning again every day. Each class I teach, I learn from you, the students, about the practice of yoga. Each breath I take on the mat shows me my ever-changing consciousness. The lessons are never-ending because this practice contains so much depth. So I want to encourage you — both brand new or seasoned yogi — to consider this series. Do you remember the feeling when you first discovered the joy of yoga and felt so invigorated by it? Or if it wasn’t yoga, another hobby or interest that filled you with LIFE? I’d like to argue that the opportunity to tap back into that kind of beginner’s mindset, that kind of passionate enthusiasm, is amongst us all the time. Every day is a new beginning. Every day is a chance to discover more. Let us dive into the foundations of this practice together with a beginner’s mind.
In this upcoming beginners series, Soul Strong Yoga co-owner and teacher Julie Afsahi will guide the class through not only proper alignment, but finding the best alignment for your body. The class will learn about and practice foundational yoga poses, such as upward salute, the three warrior poses, triangle, extended side angle, and balancing poses. She will also use yoga props, like blocks, blankets, bolsters, and straps to get a deeper stretch and better balance in a variety of poses. Content will be provided for you to feel comfortable practicing in a drop-in flow class, or in your living room. Along the way, the class environment will be kept light-hearted, playful, & a safe place to ask questions & explore the practice.
If you’ve met Julie, you know she’s born to teach. Prior to opening a yoga studio, Julie had a robust professional career in Education, which all dramatically changed after developing symptoms of neurological problems. Julie was later diagnosed with a rare neuromuscular disease, Myasthenia Gravis, and luckily, yoga has been a MAJOR factor is helping her cope with her symptoms.
Julie can often be found nerding out about different pose modifications or breaking down new postures for curious students after class. Julie is passionate about bringing yoga to all people, all bodies, and all levels. She is honored to introduce students to the amazing health benefits yoga provides for both the body and mind in a small group setting. Join us starting November 30th for this incredible beginners series to explore the foundations of yoga.
